Established in May 2007 by the Ministry of Environment and of Protection of Environment and Sea, the “Isola di Bergeggi” Marine Protected Area has been described as “a treasure chest of biodiversity, history and legend”. Bergeggi Island is located close to the Western Ligurian Sea coast, in the municipality of the same name and aligned with Punta del Maiolo, 10 km south-west of Savona.
It’s a cone shaped rocky island, emerging from the sea up to 53 meters of height, covered by the tipical native vegetation called “Mediterranean Scrub”. It faces a coast rich in caverns and coves, with little sandy bays and cliffs falling in crystal waters where on the bottom the coral reefs alternate with wide Posidonia meadows.
